So, my mom wants to go to London, although I was considering maybe some other country in Europe. I think perhaps getting London out of the way is fine with me. I haven’t ever purchased airplane tickets, or reserve a room on a vacation. What website should I use for vacation stuff like this? I NEED ADVICE AND DIRECTION

Also, you can fly from London to Dublin round trip for like $75 if you want to see another country quickly.

Fly Delta-Ok I’m biased there. Shop the major airline websites and find the best price if you can, fly midweek for the best prices. I hear Virgin is a cool experience. Heathrow is the main airport, but you may get better prices into Gatwick, buy you will need to take the train into town.
I’m a fan of Airbnb for places to stay. You are renting someone’s apartment. Pretty cool if you find the right place and it will save you money. The London Underground is fantastic so don’t feel you need to stay in the middle of London. If that is too risky then you can try priceline or Hotel Tonight to find hotel deals. Last time we went we stayed near the Baker St. Station.
In town you need to find the Farmer’s Market for great food from all over Europe. The museums in London are some of the best in the world. Spend sometime in them. Chinatown is a must and there is great food there too. Big Ben, Parlament, Buckingham Palace, Thames and all that.
you do have a passport, right?

Fair enough I guess. I’ll give out the standard advice to all visitors to my great city.
Never use a black cab, Oyster cards are your best friend.
Never pay more than £10 for fish and chips.
Never fuck with Queen’s guards.

An Oyster Card is an electronic pass that allows you to use the various public transport options in the city. You can either Top it up on a pay as you go basis or you can buy a day or week pass which will allow to use it pretty much unlimited. Being Tourists I recommend getting a pass which covers your stay. London is a big arse city but you should be able to get to any point within an hour or two.

Here’s the boring stuff: get one or two of those plug adapters on Amazon. Your phone, laptop, ipad, etc will work on 220v so a couple adapters will let you charge things. They’re all on GSM so if you have CDMA no worries, but if your phone is GSM just put it on airplane mode while you’re there (to avoid crazy international data) and enable wifi. Many places have free wifi.
Call your bank/CC company to tell them you’re traveling and you can use your card there. There’ll be FX fees but way better than the terrible exchange rate you’ll get at a currency exchange. They use “chip and pin” but your chipless card will work, just tell them it’s a swipe card. Take a little cash to make ends meet, and withdraw from an ATM when you’re there.
If you’re downtown, every hotel will have tourist maps with a million places. Everything is closer than it looks on the map because the blocks are tiny. Easy to end up on the wrong street, but harder to get lost since you’ll be half a block over.

For car related stuff, you should be in London at a fairly good time. There’s an area called Knightsbridge (near a massive, famous shop called Harrods) where lots of wealthy people live, and especially during later July early August there are lots of Supercars around there. There are supercars there all year round, but thats the peak time.
As has been said, Oyster card is a really useful little thingy and easy to get. Heathrow has a Tube Station which uses Oyster, so you can get from Heathrow into central London without too much difficulty.
